How feasible is this for the typical small business?
Deploying code updates is not as straight-forward as many might have hoped, however there are very valid reasons and most lie within the shift in foundations from Magento 1 to 2. If you are a small business on Magento 1, used to working with freelancers or smaller, non-certified agencies, used to Magento Connect Manager, you could be in for a struggle, in fact you have probably already looked at alternative platforms such as Shopify. This is the point where you really need to think about what your goals are as a business and the likely need for platform flexibility.
For many businesses who have already made the wise move to Magento 2, the complexities (and costs) of working with a brand new platform, which is still moving forward at break-neck pace (a la 2.3, PWA etc), the word daunting can also be associated with the every day experiences of site owners.

Where Magento beats competition like Shopify hands-down

A foundation in the DNA of Magento is Open Source, always has been. I recall a chat with Roy Reuben at one of the first Magento UK Meetups and put the question to him around the worry of commercial vendors rushing in to write extensions which mirrored Magento Enterprise functionality (thus some might argue making it more difficult to sell Enterprise), to which Roy responded "that's great". It was this open, inclusive, welcoming approach to a community-driven platform, that made Magento what it is today. 

To run an agency (small or large) which has the capability to seed an idea tomorrow and have it providing benefits to thousands of merchants in a matter of months, is really where the excitement comes (speaking personally) and why we have stayed 100% dedicated to Magento. Sometimes that has meant saying goodbye to long-standing clients no longer sees Magento 2 as their platform-of-choice. We started to think that the Magento 2 customer is VERY different than those who had selected Magento 1. It is on this salient point that ZERO-1 pivots in almost every way. 

We all know Shopify are going for the smaller M1 merchants, with deals and offerings that could prove attractive. 

That's where the new innovation culture of ZERO-1 was borne! 

How do we make 50 of our clients (and possible thousands of others) see the attraction of Magento 2, over a massive wall of change in platform, technology, complexity, skill-sets, affordable suppliers, marketplace offering. The list goes on.

What did we do? We buckled down, we tooled up, we kept a careful eye on all the developments of Magento 2.x and we developed (what we hope will be) a ground-breaking DevOps application built ONLY for Magento which improves almost all aspects of working with the platform(s). 
Deploying static assets is not a process which can happen on a production site, therefore the need to streamline and automate this process is something that we are all facing, many are discussing, and few are sharing.
